Veteran Anthony Hamilton Receives 2025 Kellen Sams Memorial Leadership Award

1/16/2025 –

Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports has named Anthony Hamilton the recipient of the 2025 Kellen Sams Memorial Leadership Award. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who exemplify exceptional commitment to professional development, leadership, and outdoor experiential education—qualities embodied by the late Kellen Sams.

Hamilton’s journey with Vermont Adaptive began in 2018 as a participant in the nonprofit’s Veteran Ventures program, which empowers veterans through outdoor recreation. He quickly became a volunteer, dedicating his Thursdays at Bolton Valley Resort to leading backcountry adventures for fellow veterans. Hamilton is one of the few snowboarders certified as a backcountry guide at Bolton Valley who has also been deployed as a combat veteran.

Encouraged by his experiences, Hamilton later interned with Vermont Adaptive, where he played a key role in assisting with Veteran Ventures programs lead by Veteran Ventures Program Coordinator SGG (Ret.) Misha Pemble-Belkin. His contributions extended beyond the veteran-focused initiatives, as he also volunteered with the organization’s Burlington program in the summer, helping to diversify its offerings. His expertise spans backcountry adventures, climbing, snowboarding, and skateboarding.

“Anthony has been instrumental in expanding Vermont Adaptive’s programming,” said Pemble-Belkin. “His dedication has opened new doors for veterans and adaptive athletes alike.”

Over the years, Hamilton has coordinated avalanche education courses through Vermont Adaptive and worked with Sunrise Mountain Guides to lead multi-day backcountry trips alongside Pemble-Belkin. The pair are planning new programs for the upcoming winter season.

Despite his extensive experience, Hamilton remains committed to professional growth. He is currently pursuing advanced training with the Army Mountain School and working toward certifications in avalanche safety, snowboard instruction and AMGA climbing.

The Kellen Sams Memorial Leadership Award was established to honor the legacy of Sams, a passionate outdoor educator and adventurer who died in an avalanche in 2010. The award recognizes Vermont Adaptive staff, volunteers, and interns who demonstrate exceptional leadership and commitment to professional development.

Hamilton’s contributions embody Sams’ vision of inclusive outdoor education. For more information about the Kellen Sams Memorial Leadership Award or Vermont Adaptive’s programs, visit vermontadaptive.org.
